Summer 2017, we’d unearthed several paintings from my mid twenties that I had poured wax all over the figures in them, out of some sort of frustration with my abilities. One was an image of Jackie Onassis riding a tiger, which was notable because anything Jackie definitely represents my Mom.
I decided to work on top of it digitally, with the confidence and maturity I have 15 years later. One thing I have learned in the last year is that we fully have the ability to rewrite the relationship we have to our stories. And I’m glad to put this out there for the 25 year old who couldn’t.
I never knew what riding a tiger meant until now. It means you can’t fight a tiger, nor can you run from it; your best bet is to jump on it and try to ride it out. Much like the chaos of life.
